Communities gain from leadership programme
19 November 2009 at 06h00
"Change the nation, make this a better world" is not an easy call to heed especially when you're young and from a disadvantaged background.

However, this vision for a better world is what a group of students committed to when they recently graduated from a youth leadership programme.

The students - 100 in total - completed the ARMS (Appoint Real Mentors Someone Special) Personal Brand and Mentoring Leadership Course at Cida City Campus.

Top personal brand leadership expert Timothy Webster initiated the leadership training in a quest to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds a better chance at fulfiling their potential and dreams.

"At the age of 21, I was rescued from a wayward life by a man who mentored and set me on the right track," Webster elaborates.

"My mentor said the only pay he required in return for helping me was for me to give back too. So once I graduated from university, I started the ARMS leadership programme and have never looked back."

The programme provides for youth on different levels - university students complete intensive leadership training for 12 weeks which includes areas of learning such as public speaking, conflict resolution, mentoring, personal social investment, self-awareness, team work, creating vision, negotiating, power etiquette, emotional and cultural intelligence, networking and interviewing.

Upon completion of the classroom training, these students are required to do eight weeks of community service whereby they impart their newly gained skills to teenage orphans from Ikageng Itireleng outreach project in Soweto and 5C youth shelter in Hillbrow.

"Youngsters who do not have parents to teach them about life have a real disadvantage," says Webster.

"Our students go out to assist orphans get a better footing in life. While they impart life and vocational skills, they also learn valuable lessons from the orphans who have seen a side of life that many of us are fortunate to not have experienced."

The students receive a certificate acknowledging they have complete the 20 week leadership course - something they can add to their CV and which Webster believes will give them a competitive advantage over other job seekers once they enter the job market.

Mduduzi Mogwerane, one of the students to graduate from ARMS recently, intends to continue with community service.

"I have received a lot from the course so I hope I can give back some of what I have learnt," he says. Mogwerane expects to complete his business administration degree at Cida City Campus by the end of next year.

Though the ARMS leadership programme is currently being run at Cida in partnership with Ikageng Itireleng, Webster states that the ARMS foundation is open to partnering with other universities and orphanages.
