Each day I focus on planning, developing and growing new and existing products that can help consumers better understand their credit and its impact on their lives.
I create and execute marketing communications strategies for each consumer offering. At the moment, we are looking at a greater consumer focus and education.
What are you trying to achieve?
I work closely with the marketing manager to enhance our existing solutions while identifying gaps in our product offerings.
The main focus always goes back to the consumer and how we can simplify solutions to make them transparent, helping them understand necessary financial jargon and demystifying many of the credit myths.
For example, so many South Africans do not know that they have a credit report, let alone understand the information it contains. We want to go back to basics and let credit-active consumers know how to interpret their credit reports and what to do to manage credit effectively.
What does a typical day entail?
I start the day off with a strong cup of coffee while addressing e-mails and prioritising my tasks for that day.
I then monitor and track the performance of our many marketing campaigns in the online, mobile and direct marketing spaces. I liaise with various departments to ensure that our data is used effectively to highlight the benefits of our products.
What would you call a really good day?
I love it when a plan comes together, and planning is one of my most important tasks. Whether I'm looking at results, research or budgets, I believe preparation is key to success and I thrive on that type of confirmation for my efforts.
What is your greatest challenge?
A challenge that is critical to most of what we do is ensuring compliance of solutions with legislation such as the National Credit Act and the Consumer Protection Act.
It's essential that we are consistent in terms of legislation. This means a lot of checking.
What has contributed to your success?
I am very goal-orientated and have self-imposed standards of excellence, to set and meet challenging objectives and strive for success. I also believe in my own self-confidence, my skills and judgement.
What qualifications and requirements are needed for your career?
A marketing qualification would provide one with the fundamentals. Experience in a similar industry or corporate marketing department is also beneficial. One needs project management skills, an understanding of marketing campaigns and work well in a team environment.
Any hobbies and interests?
I love travelling and the way I started was by visiting different parts of South Africa and then moved to neighbouring countries. I still have a lot of travelling to do.
Sitting around a boardroom table last week, chatting to a group of young people I was training in a supervisory skills workshop, it struck me how blessed we are in this country to live in such a diverse society. Full Story...
Some school teachers, concerned with the low commitment of learners to their studies, try to frighten learners with the prospect of becoming cleaners if they don't pay attention in maths class. Full Story...
