Amazon service centre plan a big boost for city
Amazon.com recently announced that it was planning to expand in South Africa with the opening of a new Cape Town customer service centre in October.
The operation is expected to create more than 600 jobs during its first two years, with an additional 400 seasonal jobs to be added during the fourth-quarter holiday season.
"Amazon's investment in the Western Cape once again underlines the province's quality as a world-class business process outsourcing (BPO) destination," says Fagri Semaar, interim chief executive of BPeSA Western Cape.
BPeSA Western Cape is a Section 21 company that promotes Cape Town and its surrounding areas as destinations for national and international investment in contact centres and BPO.
Formed in 2001, BPeSA Western Cape is funded by member contributions as well as by local and provincial government.
"Amazon.com is opening its new customer service centre in Cape Town, a city that has clearly showcased its strong customer focus during the successful World Cup events," says Tom Weiland, Amazon.com vice-president of worldwide customer service.
"As we work towards opening our new centre we want to be the employer of choice for customer service professionals," says Weiland. "This investment has been a team effort and I would especially like to thank the Western Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, who has played an important role and continues to be a key figure in promoting BPO investment in the Western Cape," says Semaar.
"This deal is a major boost to the economy of the Western Cape. It will create a thousand jobs and instil confidence in our ability to host world-class clients," Winde explains.
During the first quarter of 2010, Amazon.com attained sales of approximately $7.13 billion (R53.7bn), which is 46 percent more than the amount recorded for the same period of 2009.
Amazon.com offers more than 40 categories of products (including books, music, video games, electronics and others) and serves millions of customers around the world.
The Amazon.com centre in Cape Town will provide services in English and German and available positions can be found at http://www.amazon.com/careers.
